April 13, 2015 – It was a beautiful weekend! The first warm days we’ve had since… well, since the last time. Spring cleaning was the chore on tap as I dusted off my baseball mitt and spit-shined my sunglasses. It’s hard to imagine that only three short days ago it was snowing hard enough that I had to wear my potholder hat outside. Go figure! But today… nothing but sunshine! Yesterday, Mom pulled off some of the plastic that she wrapped our runs with for the winter and she cleaned out our coops. She promised to take the rest of the plastic off this week, once she is absolutely sure it will not snow again.
As for me, I am so convinced that the warm weather is here to stay, that tomorrow, I’m going to meet a few of the ladies at the Happy Chicken Brewing Company and test a couple of recipes for our spring lineup. I have an idea for a brew I’m going to call, “Wormdiggers IPA” and another called, “Snap Pea Porter”. My creative juices are flowing and I feel re-energized!
I felt so good on Sunday, that I laid a brilliantly shaped, brown-speckled egg that I believe should be on display under glass. Mom is thinking scrambled on a breakfast plate, but we’ll debate that later. Last night, I rounded everyone up, and we took the short drive over to the library. Yes, it was after hours and the building was closed, but we weren’t there to rent a book. We were there for the drive-in movie. A few months back, (before I was elected), Harry and Marilyn – the other two trustees, approved the purchase of a new sign for the library. It’s large and electric and flashes a different colorful message across the screen every twenty seconds. Sometimes the words race across the sign as fake fireworks explode in the background. Sometimes, a chipper little hot dog chases after a running bun until the bun finally stops and lets the hot dog jump inside of it. That’s my favorite! We watched the screen for a couple of hours from the comfort of the truck bed in our foldable lawn chairs. Not only were the graphics spectacular, but I learned that a chair yoga class is coming up next week, and on Wednesday, there’ll be a woman at the library who teaches doll making out of corn husks. Can you imagine?! The girls and I were enthralled at first, but after the announcements looped for the 37th time, some of the hens began to nod off. Poor Peaches snorted into a snoring frenzy before she had a chance to swallow the piece of popcorn that was in her beak! No worries though… Violet pried it open while Addie carefully reached in and removed it. Peaches slept through the entire ordeal! I’m sure we’ll share many more fascinating nights in the library parking lot this summer.
I sure hope the warm weather continues. There are so many things I want to do this year: Follow a group of fireflies to see where they go when the sun comes up; listen to a cricket concert from the back steps of Coop #3; take a Vespa ride over to Mrs. Turner’s farm and see the spring lambs; share a piña colada with my friend Pauline, of Pauline’s Crab Shack and Ballroom Dance Emporium; spy on that repulsive feline, Sugar Plum who stared at us all winter long from the dining room window; invite the ducks down the side yard for a clambake… goodness! That’s only the beginning! Mom never did let me and Sawyer get a pet goat, so I’m thinking of asking her for a piglet. Spring is a fine time for pigs! I think I’d be a tremendous pig trainer. I would teach my pig to do all sorts of amazing feats of wonder and prestidigitation. We would join the circus as the main attraction under the Big Tent and be introduced to millions of marvelous fans as, “HAPPY AND HER AMAZING PIG!”
Oh, the ideas that warmer weather nurtures!
